After These Messages: The Simpsons are Sell Outs

After watching the first two episodes of The Simpsons, we sampled a few of the VAST ARRAY of commercials in which The Simpsons appeared! But first we took a look at some other things.

Here’s Nancy Cartwright showing off MAD voice acting skills. This video is only 36 seconds long, and super impressive!

We also watched the very first Simpsons short from the Tracey Ullman Show.

The animation in this is definitely rougher, and whoa, that Homer voice!

We also talked about the 1985 Life In Hell variation on the Pledge of Allegiance. The more common one to find on the internet now is from 1991, but the 1985 one is what Julia remembers from elementary school. in particular, “One nacho, underpants…” And here’s the Reddit post with the 1991 version for comparison. And here’s the comic Geoffrey remembers with Bongo’s song.

Okay, let’s talk commercials! If you have ever wanted to see what the Simpsons look like naked, this French detergent commercial is for you! We only talk about the first 44 seconds of this video, so if you want to be up to speed on our conversation, you can cut out early.

Of course we had to revisit the Butterfinger commercials that Julia actually remembered seeing in elementary school.

Geoffrey also recommends the Bizarre Albums podcast, and specifically the episode about The Simpsons Sing the Blues.

We also watched the Simpsons advertising Burger King, and man, those Halloween toys look pretty sweet…

But while Butterfinger and Burger King seemed to really embrace the humor of The Simpsons, Toyota decided to go a much more serious (and boring) route.

Finally, BREAKING NEWS! Julia’s mother listened to our last episode and actually watched three episodes of The Simpsons and LIKED them!!! WOW!!!
