After These Messages: Hershey's Kisses with John Serpico

John Serpico of ImprovAdvice and True Tales of the Illuminati joins us to talk about commercials related to The Last Starfighter! And a bit more about the movie itself.

While researching this movie, we learned that Kay E. Kuter, who played Enduran in The Last Starfighter, was the voice of Hershey’s Kisses for 14 years. So naturally we had to hunt down some kiss commercials! We started in 1984 because that’s when The Last Starfighter came out.

“Edna Slips a Kiss” 1984 commercial: This one doesn’t have Kay E. Kuter, but it does show the primary thesis of this 80s campaign, which is that Hershey’s Kisses are signs of affection.

And a sad klutzy kid gets a Kiss from his mom in this other commercial from 1984

Like the human equivalent of a Pound Puppy. We hope this kid grew up to be okay! Is this you? Are you okay? Let us know!

John told us that he heard this is the same ad they use every year, and they pay employees bonuses with the money they save by not making new ones.

We finally moved into the 90s and Kay E. Kuter’s run, and watched this 1996 ice skating Kisses commercial.

Kay E. Kuter comes in at the very end of this one, and WOW, what a voice!

Finally, we watched this sci-fi Almond Kisses commercial, also featuring Kuter.

How do almonds get into Kisses? Space Impressment!!!

Since our conversation on commercials was so short, we decided to include some deep dive conversation about The Last Starfighter that didn’t quite make it into the main episode. Deleted Scenes, if you will!

And then we ended on a bit of a heartwarming note! John thanked us for helping him not hate this movie as much, and we also talked about how great it was that John brought us some delicious sticky buns from Flour, one of Boston’s celebrated bakeries. Then John told us that Chef Chang of Flour actually beat Bobby Flay in a sticky bun throw down! John had to leave at that point since we’d kept him in our clutches for Quite A While, but we hunted down a video of Bobby Flay praising Flour’s sticky buns and watched it on our own.

Mmm, sticky buns… Thanks again, John!
