All Dogs Go to Heaven with Britt Mitchell

Britt Mitchell of The Shestory Show, an improv show about women in history, joins us to talk about a movie that shaped her childhood: All Dogs Go to Heaven.

Content Warning: In the notable people part of this one, we discuss child abuse and the murder of a child. We don’t go into graphic detail, but if you just don’t want to deal with that at all, we totally understand, and urge you to skip a few minutes ahead from 21:21 to 24:15.

Image Description: Charlie floats in the clouds as a pink whippet consults the book of judgement, which shows him gambling and lists some of his sins including GREEDY LUST FOR MONEY, BLACKMAIL, LOAN SHARK, TAX FRAUD, EXTORTION, and RACKETEERING.

Okay, so this movie! What a weird one! Here’s Britt’s recollection:

“I watched this film a TON as a kid and it def was my primary lesson on mortality and made me into the absolute sinner I am today. I remember the plot is about this dog named Charlie who gambled and had crappy morals. He dies and gets some sort of chance at redemption. The redemption involved making an orphan girl happy? Idk. I just remember that I wanted to be the girl so bad. Her black hair was cool. One more thing I keep remembering is how AMAZING the food looked. I want to see if that Don Bluth animation holds up in adulthood.”

Was Britt Right? More or less, but there’s plenty she forgot. We take a deep dive into dog (im)morality—Geoffrey actually wrote down the entire list of Charlie’s sins, the history of pizza boxes, and Don Bluth animation, among other things.
