After These Messages: Skippy and Canadian Commercials from 1985

Friend of the pod Tori joins us once more to discuss Skippy peanut butter (which had a ton of heavy product placement in The Peanut Butter Solution) and some Canadian commercials from 1985!

Annette Funicello Skippy commercials

Dennis the Menace Skippy commercial

Only pluperfect peanuts, please!

Animated Rockin’ Skippy commercial

The people in that animated Skippy commercial are, as Julia notes, extremely cool. Perhaps even cooler than the cool kids from the 1980s Skittles commercial we discussed last week?

The crispy coated peanuts Julia mentioned are apparently known as Japanese Peanuts in the United States, and apparently they were invented in Mexico by a Japanese immigrant.

Skippy Dipping Commercial

We also speculate about influencers getting into the peanut butter hair growth trend. Happy to report that our work should be easy with things like the number 1 tip on this Lifehack list. And yes, you CAN find videos of people using peanut butter as a conditioning mask.

Eleven Canadian Commercials from 1985

Bathtubs Over Broadway is a documentary about industrial musicals that Julia recommends, and that the Canada Cooler commercial reminded them of.

Do you personally remember any of these commercials? Have you ever tried Schooner lager? Let us know!

Next week is our very first bonus week for paid subscribers, and we’ll be covering a classic from Geoffrey’s childhood: The Richest Cat in the World!
